Zonta International is a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy. The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau, a chartered club of Zonta International, is dedicated to advancing the status of women worldwide through community service projects and contribution. The Cape Girardeau Club supports Zonta International with one-third of the club’s fund-raising dollars going to these projects, and we have raised more than $270,000 for contributions to community and international projects.
Among our projects is the annual Women of Achievement Luncheon which helps raise funds for the many service projects we sponsor, including the Safe House for Women, Cape Adult Education & Literacy Program, SEMO Walk for Women, Crisis Aid International and First Call for Help, just to name a few.
The best way to begin exploring Zonta is to attend a monthly meeting so you can get acquainted with a fantastic group of professional women and so you can learn more about our club and the organization. There are several important criteria for membership:
ATTENDANCE: Monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at Cape Girardeau Country Club (250 Country Club Dr., Cape Girardeau, MO 63701). We typically begin gathering around 5:30 for an informal meet and greet prior to the meeting. As a classified service organization, our international bylaws require regular attendance. However, we realize that personal and business conflicts may arise which, with advance notice, can result in an excused absence. Members receive an e-mail each month and we ask that they respond to indicate whether or not they will attend the regularly scheduled meeting and whether or not they will need childcare. The meeting includes dinner and a business meeting and ususally lasts about an hour and a half.
SERVICE: Zonta’s primary goals are to serve the community, locally and internationally, and to promote the status of women. To accomplish these goals, members are expected to give a minimum of 20 hours of their time per year to service projects and fundraisers. Our primary local service project is our financial literacy program whereby we work with the clients from various area agencies to provide them with the training and skills they need to be financially stable and to get and retain a job. In addition, we provide clothes for and fund a working women’s clothes closet at the local Safe House for Women. Our other current service projects include the annual American Cancer Walk for Life, CapeLibrary book sales, and we provide landscaping services for some Habitat for Humanities homes. Our fundraisers include an annual Women of Achievement Luncheon and our Neiman Marcus Flea Market. Those benefiting from our fundraising efforts include Southeast Missouri State University and Career and Technology Center scholarship recipients, Habitat for Humanity, Cape Library, Girl Scouts, Cottonwood Treatment Center, Women’s Safe House and Big Sisters.
As with any dynamic organization, there is a great deal of information about Zonta to absorb. Membership in Zonta is a commitment, but the rewards are many. Although we recognize that executives and professional women have very busy schedules, the members of the Zonta Club are dedicated to the ideals of Zonta and to also having a great time and creating life-lasting friendships as we strive towards our goals.
