The goal of the Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Award Program is to encourage young women to participate in public affairs by recognizing the candidate’s commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. ‘Public affairs’ refers to all aspects of community life where decisions have to be made about issues which relate to and affect those communities in which people work and live. In order for more women to be represented in key decision-making positions worldwide, we must encourage young women to pursue careers or seek leadership positions in public policy making, government and volunteer organizations and further their education with these aims in view.

Zonta clubs provide awards for club recipients, and district/region and international awards are funded by the Zonta Foundation for Women.  Our Zonta local club offers a $1,000 scholarship, and Zonta International offers 37 international scholarships of $5,000 (more information found here).

Walk for Women

Each year our local Zonta Club donates $1,000 for the Cindy Gannon Walk for Women   The idea for the Walk for Women event was initially developed by Cindy Gannon as a way to recognize the accomplishments of our female student-athletes, while helping to raise money to support athletic scholarships. Since its inception, Cindy has helped guide this event, which has raised more than $500,000 for athletic scholarships. On April 8, 2017, Director of Athletics Brady Barke announced that in appreciation for the decade long commitment to the Walk for Women event and her efforts to champion women’s athletics, the event would be renamed in her honor and moving forward would be known as the Cindy Gannon Walk for Women.
